Aerator
Pasture Aeration and Soil Health
For several years, the Lower Wind River Conservation District has explored pasture aeration as a potential tool for improving soil health. Because some of our local soils are clay-heavy and prone to compaction, the District identified the RanchWorx Aerator as a possible way to improve water infiltration and support pasture productivity. In 2026, the District purchased an aerator to expand its conservation equipment program and provide local landowners with another tool to support soil health and pasture management.
Why Does Soil Aeration Matter?
Compacted soil can restrict root growth and limit the movement of air and water. Aeration creates openings in the soil that may improve water infiltration, support root development, and help existing grasses and vegetation access available resources.
Potential benefits include:
- Reduced restrictions on root growth where compaction is a limiting factor.
- Improved water infiltration under suitable conditions.
- Better growing conditions for existing vegetation.
- An option for addressing certain soil limitations without extensive tillage.
Is Aeration the right practice for my land?
Aeration is not a solution for every soil health challenge and cannot replace adequate fertility, appropriate grazing management, suitable plant species, or sufficient moisture. Successful use begins with identifying soil conditions that aeration can reasonably address! Begin with a soil test, research your options and discuss your issues and needs with a resource conservation specialist.
Expanding Conservation Opportunities
The District has traditionally offered no-till drills to help landowners establish vegetation while minimizing soil disturbance. Adding a pasture aerator expands these options by providing another tool to address certain physical soil limitations.
Our goal with all of our programs is to provide practical conservation resources, encourage informed land management, and support healthier soils and sustainable working lands throughout the Lower Wind River Conservation District.
