Weeds
The Lower Wind River Conservation District supports the Fremont County Weed and Pest, and their efforts as the lead agency in our area for control of noxious and invasive plants. We encourage landowners to take advantage of their cost-share programs, which are designed to provide the best support and resources for weed management.
The LWRCD has also offered cost-share assistance as well as outreach and education to help with invasive plant control. In 2026 the LWRCD and Fremont County Weed and Pest revived the Lower Wind River Weed Management Area working group, comprised of land managers and representatives with the Lower Wind River Conservation District boundary, working to control and eradicate noxious and invasive weeds.
One of the species of priority is Puncturevine (Tribulus terrestris). The Fremont County Weed and Pest and working group developed an educational Puncturevine brochure that provides the History, Identification, Issues and Control of the problematic weed. Please click on the picture below to view the entire brochure. The LWRCD has also added a Sticker Burr Roller (shown right) to our list of equipment to assist with the removal of Puncturevine / Goatheads. The cost to rent the Sticker Burr Roller is $25.00 / day. Types of Weeds or Invasive Plants
A weed is a plant that interferes with management objectives for a given area of land at a given point in time. J.M. Torell. The term is situational —for example, alfalfa is valuable in a hayfield but would be considered a weed if it were growing in a corn crop. A weed simply conflicts with a person’s management goals at that location.
A noxious weed is a plant species that has been officially designated by federal, state, or county law as harmful to agriculture, public health, property, or the environment. These species usually cause significant economic losses, and spread aggressively if left unchecked (e.g., leafy spurge, Canada thistle). Click here for a list of Designated and Declared Noxious Weeds of Fremont County.
Similar to a noxious weed, an invasive weed is a non-native plant that establishes, spreads rapidly, and outcompetes native vegetation, often causing ecological or economic harm. While many invasive plants are alsolisted as noxious, not all are. Some may not yet be legally classified but still pose serious threats such as Cheatgrass to rangelands and pasturelands. It invades andpushes out desirable species, removes forage and habitat for wildlife, and increases fuel for wildfires as it dries out early in the season, spreads rapidly and it’s fine-texture is highly flammable.
